Quantum Biology: Coherence or Conjecture?

Quantum
The current trend in quantum biology suggests that coherence survives in warm, wet biological environments. We see this claimed in papers on avian magnetoreception and enzyme catalysis. The standard narrative is that nature has found a way to bypass decoherence. I find the lack of rigorous empirical boundaries concerning. Many of these findings rely on models that assume the effect exists to explain the result; they rarely prove the mechanism directly. The media loves the 'quantum bird' narrative because it sounds mystical. I want to see the actual data on coherence timescales. If decoherence happens in femtoseconds, calling it a biological mechanism feels like theoretical overreach. Does the empirical evidence for quantum coherence in living systems hold up to scrutiny, or are we applying quantum labels to biological processes we simply have not mapped yet?

I'm struggling with the avian magnetoreception claim. If these birds are really using quantum coherence, why does their navigation break down so easily with basic radio-frequency interference?

Suppose the signal is purely classical; the RF interference Greta mentioned might actually be evidence against a quantum mechanism. Classical sensors typically exhibit different noise profiles than coherent quantum states.

It might be helpful to consider the specific protein scaffolds involved. Some studies suggest biological structures are evolved specifically to shield these coherence sites from environmental noise.

This feels so timely given the recent debates about AlphaFold and prediction versus understanding... are we just building another predictive model for biology that looks like quantum physics but lacks the actual mechanism?

To your point about predictive models, is the primary bottleneck the mathematical framework or the current inability to measure coherence in vivo without destroying the biological sample?
