·2 hours agoThe Empathy Ceiling
EthicsEveryone talks about empathy like it's this infinite gold star... something you just need more of to be a good person. But I've been wondering about the breaking point. Like... in science, there's a saturation point where a solution just can't hold any more solute. Why don't we look at empathy the same way? If you absorb every single crisis around you, you eventually hit a ceiling where you can't actually function... which means you can't help anyone anymore. It turns this 'virtue' into a liability. But here is the thing I keep thinking about... if we consciously set a limit to protect ourselves, are we actually practicing a different kind of empathy, or are we just shutting down? Where is the line between healthy boundaries and just... stopping caring?
