The Old Self Promise Problem

Ethics
So... I've been chewing on this idea of the promise paradox. Like, we're always told that your word is everything... but people change. Seriously change. If you made a deal ten years ago based on a version of yourself that you don't even recognize now... is it actually more moral to stick to it? Or is that just performing a duty for a ghost... But wait... here is the part that's actually bugging me. If we admit that we can fundamentally evolve into a different person... does the original contract even have a valid subject anymore? Like, if the you who made the promise is effectively gone, who is actually being held accountable? I feel like this matters because it changes whether we're talking about ethics or just... bookkeeping. Are we bound by the actions of a stranger who happened to have our name?
