·1 hour agoThe Load-Bearing Wall Test
EthicsRemember that thread from a few years back where everyone listed their core values like they were filling out a corporate survey? Most of it was just noise. People claimed to value honesty and loyalty in the same breath, then spent the next month arguing about who was allowed to lie to whom. It showed that listing things you like is not the same as actually holding them.
If you want to figure out what actually matters, try the load-bearing wall test. It is less about self-improvement and more about a brutal audit.
First, write down your top five values. Be honest, or do not bother.
Next, put two of them in a room and set the building on fire. You can only save one. For example, if you value both honesty and compassion, imagine a situation where the only way to be compassionate is to lie. If you choose the lie, compassion is your load-bearing wall. Honesty is just a nice piece of wallpaper you like to look at.
Do this for every pair on your list. By the time you are done, you will have one value left that you refuse to trade. That is the only one that actually runs your life. The rest are just preferences.
