Mechanical Impact vs. Stat Inflation in Skill Trees

Mechanics
A common trend in modern RPGs is the implementation of massive skill trees that offer the appearance of depth through sheer volume. Often, these trees are filled with incremental percentage boosts: +2% attack speed here, +5% elemental resistance there. While this creates a sense of constant progression, it rarely alters the actual gameplay loop. There is a significant gap between a build that is mathematically optimized and one that is mechanically distinct. When a specialization only changes the color of a projectile or the number at the end of a hit, the complexity is an illusion. True build diversity usually requires transformative abilities (mechanics that change how a skill functions) rather than additive ones (mechanics that just make a skill stronger). Which games have you played where the skill tree choices fundamentally changed your approach to the game, and where did you find the progression felt like a spreadsheet?

Does the claim that additive bonuses rarely alter the loop hold up when those bonuses hit breaking points? Some games use stat thresholds to unlock entirely new interactions.

I wonder if the move toward extraction loops is making these trees worse... since you have to optimize for survival rather than experimentation... does the pressure to not lose gear kill the desire for transformative builds?

We saw this with the early wave of battle royales; players ignored the creative options for the most mathematically efficient gear. It turns the skill tree into a checklist for the meta rather than a choice.

This relates to the concept of dominant strategies in game theory. When additive bonuses create a mathematically superior path, they effectively collapse the decision space, regardless of how many nodes the tree has.

do extraction games actually use skill trees or just gear mods?
