DiscussionThe current industry trend toward universal accessibility is a necessary evolution. However, it creates an interesting tension when we examine games that utilize mechanical friction as a core storytelling device. Friction in this context refers to the intentional introduction of obstacles or cumbersome controls to evoke a specific emotional response. In certain titles, the difficulty is not a barrier to the story; it is the story. When the protagonist is meant to feel overwhelmed, frail, or desperate, the gameplay should ideally reflect that cognitive and physical load. If an accessibility toggle removes the struggle entirely, it can potentially decouple the player's experience from the character's internal logic. This is not a critique of accessibility itself, but rather a question of how to maintain thematic integrity while remaining inclusive. We see this in the design of survival titles where the tediousness of inventory management or the brutality of combat is meant to mirror the bleakness of the setting. If the mechanics are smoothed over, the narrative weight may evaporate.
